The Atelier Retiro isn’t just

about ceramics, it’s a community

Atelier Retiro is a hidden gem in the historic center of Guimarães. We’re not just ceramics, we’re an integral part of the community! Rua do Retiro existed long before us. Our neighbors were born here, just like the generations before them. When you visit our atelier, you’ll also meet our neighbors! They come and go through our five open doors. They check on us, bring us fresh produce to avoid waste, and we exchange favors that go beyond borrowing sugar. They’re invested in our art! Our atelier is deeply integrated into the life of this neighborhood.

Joy Hanford has been weaving community into her artistic practice for over 20 years. At Atelier Retiro, we believe that community is an artful act. We all invest, nurture, and dedicate part of our time and attention to building and supporting our community.

An experience, class, residency, or visit to Atelier Retiro offers you more than just time to create. It welcomes you into a warm, community-focused environment dedicated to supporting your project.

Atelier Retiro is a community ceramics workshop located in the heart of the historic center of Guimarães.

We are a bustling space with 2 full-time artists, 7 part-time artists, and over 20 community members who join us for events and classes throughout the year.

Located on Rua do Retiro, in the Historic Center of Guimarães (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Atelier Retiro is at the heart of it all.

Rua do Retiro is steeped in history. This residential neighborhood, with over a century of shared living, has recently begun welcoming artists into its available spaces.

Here, you’ll find a music festival, an embroidery workshop, clothing design and tailoring, as well as studios for mosaics, painting, ceramics, and much more!

And it all started with Atelier Retiro.

Since 2020, Atelier Retiro has been offering a wide variety of classes and events for its community:

  • A community event that takes place mainly during the summer months, where the community comes together to have lunch at Atelier Retiro.

Each person brings their own packed meal, creating a social gathering where we share experiences, stories, and food.

  • The "Let's Swap" is a community exchange initiative where people can trade objects, clothing, and accessories in a collaborative and sustainable manner, promoting reuse and the spirit of sharing.

  • A meet-up for artists and students working in all areas of ceramics.

In addition to socializing, it always features a presentation by an artist or master potter.

  • Beginner and advanced classes are offered in pottery wheel techniques and manual skills, where participants can learn to independently develop pieces from scratch or refine and explore new techniques for those with prior experience.

These classes are designed to promote autonomy in the creation of pieces, allowing for skill development and the discovery of new possibilities in pottery.

  • Several workshops are taught, focusing on manual ceramic construction techniques as well as on the potter's wheel.

Additionally, we have themed and seasonal workshops where participants can apply these techniques in a more fun and creative way.

  • We offer emerging artists the opportunity to undertake a small internship with us, during which they develop a personal project related to ceramics, with the aim of enhancing their techniques and creative process, in exchange for assistance in maintaining the studio.

  • During the summer, we offer national and international artistic residencies, with instruction in English, providing an intensive experience for both beginner and advanced ceramicists.

The residencies cover a wide range of techniques and are an opportunity to deepen knowledge and explore new approaches in ceramics, whether for established artists or those just starting out.

ATELIER RETIRO

Mission

Community is an artful act.

Our mission is to provide our community with the freedom to live creatively. Through ceramics and our complementary programs, Atelier Retiro offers a refuge from the pressures and stress of life, serving as a safe and peaceful harbor in turbulent times.

Values

Our core values are: Creativity, Respect, and Community.

Regardless of skill level, commitment, or time spent with us — whether a few hours, weeks, or years — you are part of our community. The team and members of Atelier Retiro are dedicated to fostering a safe, respectful, and creative space for everyone.

We work to ensure that all members are willing to learn, give space for expression and emotional processing, and respect the creativity and personal space of others in the community. Hate speech is not, and will not be, tolerated.

Community is key!

Members

Atelier Retiro is a ceramics studio for adults, focusing on skill-building and continuous learning in ceramics and the arts. We also welcome teenagers and young adults, occasionally organizing specific programs for children and families upon request.

The Atelier Retiro team aims for each student to use the knowledge they acquire in their future practice.

Every experience, workshop, class, or artistic residency contributes to building confidence and control over new techniques and materials.

At Atelier Retiro, we don’t offer crafts activities. WE TEACH THE ART OF THE CRAFT.

Vision

Our vision is to build community, one pot at a time.

Connecting with clay is connecting with humanity. When we, as a species, settled in one place, paused our nomadic ways, waited to cultivate our crops, and lit the first fire to transform clay into ceramics, it was also the moment community was born. This experience lives within all of us to this day. Clay is a link to that first place where we found a safe and thriving environment to settle, learn, and grow.

This is how we build community at Atelier Retiro. We come together, build, create, and grow.

Community

Our community is made up of people seeking a break while pursuing personal goals and exploring creative ideas.

Whether it’s a hobby for an amateur, professional development for an artist, broadening horizons for a professional ceramicist, or fulfilling a dream for a retiree who’s always wanted to take an art class, everyone is shares the same goal.

We sit side by side, learn, grow, laugh, and enjoy the simple pleasure of working with clay.

No matter who you are, your age, background, nationality, or skill level, our doors are always open. There is always a place at the table for you, where we create beautiful pieces, share transformative experiences, and build lasting memories.

At Atelier Retiro, community is the key to keeping our doors open for everyone who walks through them.
