Raku - Alexandre Carvalho
The Raku Experience at Alexandre Carvalho’s Studio, Trofa
Making Raku at Alexandre Carvalho’s studio in Trofa, Porto, is a unique experience that begins even before the firing. Before the pieces are placed in the kiln, participants are guided by Alexandre through the process of applying the glazes. This step is essential to define the final effects of the piece and, throughout the process, Alexandre shares his knowledge of the various glazing techniques and the use of different chemicals. He teaches how each component reacts in the fire and how to create unique effects, offering a deep understanding of the chemistry involved in ceramics.
After applying the glazes, the moment of firing in the Raku kiln is an intense experience. The pieces are removed at high temperatures and, with the help of combustible materials, the fire creates unpredictable reactions, resulting in surprising and personalized finishes. In Alexandre’s studio, the process is as much technical as it is artistic, and the welcoming and collaborative environment allows each student to explore their own creativity.
In addition to being a space for individual learning, Alexandre's studio is also an important meeting point for the Atelier Retiro community. By promoting the exchange of knowledge and the appreciation of ceramic art, Raku is a living and constantly evolving art form.
